Wetlands International
Wetlands exist in all parts of the world. They cover 6% of the earth's surface, but store 33% of all CO₂ on earth. Wetlands are crucial links in many larger landscapes. One billion people are directly dependent on wetlands for their livelyhood (income, nourishment and clean water); 40% of all plants and animals grow and live in wetlands. Wetlands by the sea capture CO₂ up to 55 times faster than tropical rain forests. Since 1900, approximately 70% of all wetlands have been lost or significantly degraded. Wetlands International has the ambition to protect and restore dozens of millions of acres of wetlands over the coming years.
